As the Gospels attest, much of Jesus’ life and his public activity took place in Galilee. Knowledge of this region is therefore fundamental to understanding his life and thought. The intense archaeological work that began in recent years is providing key points for understanding the region in a new way, underwriting the Jewish character of the region and its connection with Jerusalem from the Hasmonean era; the symbiotic relationship between cities and rural areas; and a peculiar religious life. The symposium offers the opportunity to discuss it all with one of the region’s top experts. Professor Mordechai Aviam is a well-known Israeli archaeologist, specializing in Galilean archaeology. He is the director of the Kinneret Institute for Galilean Archaeology at Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee (Israel). Excavations are currently underway at the El-Araj mine, located north of Lake Gennesaret, identified as the “Bethsaida of the New Testament”.
