The necessary metamorphosis: Cardinal Mendonça’s “Paul”

Not just an apostle but also a man who knew how to reinvent his own way of acting, thinking and living. Paul of Tarsus is the protagonist of Card. José Tolentino Mendonça latest book entitled Necessary Metamorphosis. Rereading St. Paul(Vita e Pensiero, 16 euros, in bookstores). Appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education in 2022, Mendonça who specializes in biblical texts, approaches these texts with rigor and creativity, opening himself to the questions of the present and dialoguing with different cultural expressions. In the first part of the work, the author reviews the information we have about the apostle: from documentary sources to the stages of his education. He then focuses on literature and his ability to work in teams. A very important network of collaborations, formed by men and women, young and old, Jews and pagans, compatriots and foreigners. The attention of card. Mendonça then focuses on the experience and preaching of St. Paul: “In Paul, Christianity begins with the necessary operation of the recreation of the believing subject. The lesson of the apostle forces us to break with the concept of Christianity as an established fact…almost as if it were an automatism. The believer is regulated and molded by an experience of metamorphosis“.
