Against the Philistines
47
1 This is Yahweh’s word that came to the prophet Jeremiah con cern ing the Philistines before Pharaoh attacked Gaza. 2 Thus says Yahweh:
2 “Look, waters rise from the north;
2 soon they will become a raging flood
2 overflowing the land and all it contains,
2 the towns and their inhabitants.
2 All dwellers in the land will wail
3 at the sound of the hooves of stamping steeds,
3 the rattle of chariots, the rumbling of wheels.
3 Parents forget their children,
3 as their hands fall limp.
4 The day of ruin has come upon the Philistines;
4 Tyre and Sidon, the last of their allies, are cut off from them.
4 Yahweh is set to destroy the Philis tines,
4 the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
5 Gaza is shaved bald,
5 Ashkelon has perished.
5 O remnant in the valley,
5 how long will you gash yourselves?
6 O sword of Yahweh,
6 how long before you rest?
6 Return to your scabbard;
6 stop and keep still!
7 But how can it rest,
7 when it is Yahweh who commanded it
7 to attack Ashkelon and the seacoast?”
